Roatan Island is the major of Honduras' Bay Islands, it is 60 kilometres, or 37 mi long (aprox.), and something less than 8 kms. or 5.0 mi wide at its widest point.

Politically, the islands is conformed by 2 municipalities: Jose Santos Guardiola in the east of the island and Roatan (who includes the Cayos Cochinos) further south in the west.

The main town of the island is Coxen Hole (capital of Roatan municipality), than there are French Harbour, West End, and Oak Ridge (capital of Jose Santos Guardiola).

At the extreme east, separated just by a small mangroves channel of 15 meters wide there is a another island, Santa Elena, and more to the eastern we find Morat, Barbaretta, and Pigeon Cay.

Roatan lies above a magnificent natural monument: the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the largest barrier reef in the Caribbean Sea (second largest worldwide after Australia's Great Barrier Reef).
